The purpose of this study was to find out how the bioluminescence, that is the ability of aliving organism to produce light, of the bacteria Photobacterium Phosphoreum varies depending on different concentrations of zinc ions. This was made with the intention of comparing the results with the amount of zinc present in the natural environment of the bacteria. Zinc was chosen because it is an essential metal as well as a metal common in antifouling paints and other sources of marine pollution. In this report it will also be discussed whether the method used is adequate as a toxicity analysis.
